Weequahic Park is a park located in Newark, New Jersey. It is designed by the Olmsted Brothers firm and contains the largest lake in Essex County. The park consists of 311 acres, including an 80-acre lake. You can enjoy fishing and boating on the lake, or go on a walk along the paths. Depending on the time of year, you can also take a horseback riding tour of the park.
Weequahic Park Association and the Center for Urban Restoration Ecology of Rutgers University have joined forces to carry out a comprehensive inventory of the park’s trees and other plants. The project is also designed to examine the diversity of the park’s wildlife. Community youth are helping to conduct the inventory activities. These students will help us document the state of the trees and other plant life. The results will help us determine how we can improve the park and make it a better place to live.
In 1906, the area was still rural. Large estates grew along Elizabeth Avenue and Lyons Avenue, which are now Chancellor Avenue. The Weequahic area was one of the last undeveloped areas of the city before housing pressure made development inevitable. Fortunately, the Essex County Park Commissioners stepped in to preserve this green space by purchasing land on the eastern side of Elizabeth Avenue. Ultimately, the park was completed and now boasts more than a dozen different parks.
The Weequahic Park Association was founded in 1992 by concerned park patrons. It modeled itself on the Central Park Conservancy in Manhattan. This group has sought grants to help restore the park. In 1998, it received a $3 million grant from the Environmental Protection Administration to install a state-of-the-art jogging track. Today, Weequahic Park is a model for urban park restoration and is home to several cultural events.
The 2.2-mile rubberized jogging track in Weequahic Park is the longest resilient surface track in the world. The track was planned and built by the Weequahic Park Conservancy. The park also features a gazebo designed by the famed Beaux-Arts design firm Carrere and Hastings for Newark’s 250th anniversary in 1916. In addition to the park’s parklands, weequahic also houses two historic apartment towers and a rose garden.
The new building will mimic the Watsessing and Cedar Grove parks in Essex County. It will have a full-service kitchen, meeting rooms, and office space for visitors. The Weequahic Park Association and Essex County have worked together to improve the park and run community programs there. The new building will also feature a 100-foot outdoor patio for people to enjoy the park. In addition to its amenities, the Weequahic Park Heritage Center will be an important piece of the community.
During the 1920s, the park was heavily used. Activities included outdoor concerts, floral displays, and model yacht contests. In 1928, the county extended Elizabeth Avenue and added clay tennis courts. They also constructed a new field house and added twelve tennis courts to the old park. The 18-hole golf course opened in 1968. After many years, Weequahic Park once again became a popular park. So much so that it is now a popular destination for those looking for entertainment.
In addition to the Weequahic Lake, the park also has multiple arts and culture programs. You can enjoy line dancing, painting a watercolor, or attend a history tour of the park. There are also bilingual storytimes and arts and crafts. The park’s name means “head of the cove” and the lake used to serve as a dividing line between the Hackensack and Raritan tribes.
Aside from being a great place to relax, many visitors come to Weequahic Park to listen to the soft, relaxing music played by the band. This music can be heard all over town as well, and you can even hear it as you drive down the street! And since the park is near the Passaic River, you can take a boat tour to cool off on the water. And don’t forget the fishing!
A popular spot for families, the L. Bamberger Department Store has built an ideal home in Weequahic on the largest “estate” lot on Elizabeth Avenue. The building faces Weequahic Park. Bamberger, who owned one of the largest department stores in downtown Newark, had envisioned the perfect setting to showcase the store’s goods. He hired Montclair architect Francis A. Nelson to design the building.
